How old was Molly??

If I were Molly and my mother treated me the way Molly's did, I'd want to live with my dad. I'd be happy for my dad that he finally found someone who loved him and didn't think that sex and everything else was dirty. I'd especially want nothing to do with my mother after having the doctor examine me against my will. If that ever happened in this day and age, that mom and the doctor would be put in prison and there'd be a huge scandal. That mother didn't deserve her daughter. The father did. He seemed to have a special relationship with his daughter and let her be a teenage girl.

I think she was 17, like Dee herself.

Helen was an absolute b**ch, wasn't he?

Molly had to be an accident.....it was probably the only time they ever had sex.

What a warped human being Helen was....and HER mother was no better.

reply

I never really knew her age in the movie, but in the book, I believe Molly was only 14 or 15. I remember being shocked because she was very young.

If what her son said is correct, Sandra Dee was actually 15 when this film was shot, not 17 as publicity claimed. Her mother supposedly lied about her age to get her into school and modeling jobs. She was only 13 when she made her first film in 1957. It's kind of disturbing when you think of how she was doing love scenes with grown men, but she certainly appeared more mature than her actual age.

The weird thing about her age is that Dodd said (in his book) that she was born in 1944, but her grave marker says 1942. So, I think her age is still up in the air.....

reply

I've seen a copy of her birth certificate on her A&E bio which also says 1942, but birth certificates can be falsified - who knows.

reply

Anyone else thinks she looked way older than 17? I could have sworn she was in her mid-20s, thus horribly miscast in the movie, at least in my head.

reply

Molly might have been in her mid- to late-teens but she acted like a toddler, lisping out that baby-talk, saying stupid things like "when I have a naughty dream" or "when I feel like being naughty".....and says this crap to her father, no less!! ICK!!! And how about when she spies Troy's character through her binoculars and says, "There's a boy looking at me!" What are her father and the skipper? Chopped liver? Wow---talk about self-centered! (giggle) I saw this first in my teens in 1970---and even then, I wanted to puke. But Richard Egan, I always liked.

reply

It was the hair and clothing. Teens didn't dress much differently than their parents. Her short curly hair and black mascara made her look older.
