Yiddish has a great word for this movie

Dreck

reply

Have you been bad Dune? Have you done bad things with girls?????

reply

what is dreck?

reply

This isn't the exact translation, but basically it means junk, drivel, nonsense...in short, the film is lousy.

reply

Oi!

reply

Dreck means poop.

reply

Odd. In German, it just means dirt.

reply

Doesn't Yiddish have a word for everything Dune? It is a corny movie in many ways but it was a "coming of age" for many others.

reply

Despite its being too slick and Hollywood and waspy, I loved this film. I love that it is old fashioned and dated. That's a huge part of the charm.

reply

How about SCHOEN? I love this picture, I wish I had been able to see it when it came out, but I was too young. Written on the Wind and Imitation of Life, two Sirk classics, are not better than Daves's movie.

reply

But it's good dreck!

reply

I was going to say schmaltz!

reply

My word would have been "goofy," but "dreck" will do.

reply

I agree it's dreck but it does correctly show the morals and attitudes in the '50's. To us now it seems utterly ludicrous. My older sisters behaved the way Sandra Dee did in the movie. Nice girls didn't put out. And if they did they could get pregnant which was the worst fate in the world at the time.

reply

The movie is awful because it's badly written. The director and actors didn't have much to work with so I won't criticize them but this is really, really, really bad.

The themes and issues the movie deals with are interesting. That's what makes the movie even worse because there was a lot to work with. You're right the time in which the movie was made played a role but this movie could easily be made today and still work. A lot has changed but attitudes have not changed that much.

reply

'Yiddish' and 'great' are two words which when put together make no sense whatsoever.

reply

It's fun dreck.

I'm watching it right now, and I washed my hair, just for you. Best line ever.
