I don't know. There is an attitude with marketers of any movie older than a few years that everyone knows the plot of the movie, especially movies from the 30s, 40s and 50s. I will say that the concept of spoiling the plot after an initial theatrical release is still fairly new (compared to the history of movies) - about 30 years aka: or the penetration of home VCRs. Movies used to come out and if you didn't see it people would talk about it and tell you the plot, plus there were a ton of film retrospective magazines. I remember reading about the entire plot of Suddenly, Last Summer many times in the 70s and 80s before I finally saw it for the first time when it was released on home video. I also remember my Mom telling me the entire plot of Night of the Living Dead when I was a little kid, I think it was 15 more years before I was finally able to see it!
