Franciosa great; writing exceptional by Odets, BUT

... other than that a movie that was probably meant for the stage rather than film. I always had a crush on Franciosa as a kid, in TV especially. Always sexy, dark and brooding and brought intelligence to his complex characters. The story was OK, but the dialogue was excellent and that in turn made court room scenes riveting. However, Rita Hayworth was too old for the part, altho still very stunning. She was also very stiff and wooden. Gig Young good as always, as was Mildred Dunnock. Still I give it a 6....a lot of talking and hoopla over an average story.

By this point, all of Rita's delicious vivacity had been drained. Whether it was drinking or VERY early onset of Alzheimer's or simply the emotional battering she'd taken from experiences with Aly Kahn and Dick Haymes, Rita was a shell of what she'd been.
