S+S coming to DVD 3/25/08

Word is that SOLOMON AND SHEBA will be released on DVD March 25, 2008. This seems to be in tandem with the release of some other UA epics from that era, TARAS BULBA and KINGS OF THE SUN, the same date. Fox has the rights to release the UA library now, which is good, as they're very good about putting their stuff out on homevid.

As I said on another thread, it'd be great if they included as an extra footage of Tyrone Power's scenes as Solomon. I'd love to see these again (I saw a few over 30 years ago), as a point of comparison, since director King Vidor thought Power was much better than Brynner. But I'll bet they include nothing, and just issue a bare-bones disc, which would be a real disappointment but not a surprise.

As of this date no word on any details about the DVD, but will post anything I learn. Anyway, at least the movie's coming out.

It is to be hoped that the "uncensored" European version will be the one that is issued. The main thing going for this movie was the sensational, sexy Lollobrigida, so the more of her that is seen, the better.
I aggreee, too, that at least some of the major scenes with Power would be a nice inclusion as it would be interesting to see how the original casting choice would have fared in the role as compared to Mr. Brynner. Was there more "chemistry" with Power and La Lollo?

reply

I've read that the chemistry between Ty and Lollo was indeed much better than between her and Yul. Power was a (pardon the expression) kinder, gentler man than the relentlessly macho Brynner, and every one of his leading ladies loved him for his solicitousness and dedication (and handsomeness!).

Gina was apparently devastated by his death. An hour or so before it she had been complaining to Power about some problem with her dressing room -- it's unclear whether she was just venting or was speaking to Power in his role as one of the producers of the film, through his production company's participation -- and he had calmed her down, telling her it wasn't that important and that "life goes on" -- a phrase she recalled later on and which apparently shook her, given what soon occurred.

After his heart attack on the set, they had to use her limo to drive Power to the Ruber clinic in Madrid, as astoundingly the company had no doctor or ambulance attached to it, but he died four minutes into the trip.

I suspect that if the DVD includes anything, it'll confine itself to a few stills instead of actual film footage. But the stills are widely available and of course convey nothing of the performances.

But -- what's the uncensored version of S&S? Never heard of it. I assume you mean more and/or sexier footage of GL? Any details?

I always thought her costume in the frankly laughable orgy sequence was the sexiest attire worn by an actress in any Hollywood film since the production code came in in the early 30s (see de Mille's THE SIGN OF THE CROSS, 1932), though within a few years even it would look relatively tame!

I like brynner more than power

Well, the director, King Vidor, said later that "With Power, it would have been a marvelous picture. Without him, it became an uninteresting, nothing sort of film." His point was that Power understood and played Solomon's weaknesses and character flaws as well as his strengths and sought and was giving a more nuanced, complex interpretation of the role. After Brynner was signed he insisted that the script be rewritten to make Solomon more of a conventional, macho hero figure, which was the type of part Yul was used to playing. Power was not a great actor but he was a much more conscientious one who increasingly looked for more meaningful parts or ways to play them. Brynner, "The King and I" notwithstanding, was an actor of fairly limited range and was not a good choice for this role, certainly as it was originally conceived. He was usually more concerned with maintaining his image rather than delving into the characters he portrayed. And I like Brynner too, by the way, but I recognize his limitations.

Well if nothing else Yul didn't make thouble for other people at the Mc Carty hearings like Power did.
