Campfest Supreme!.......

Just sayin'..

This movie brought much mirth. Just hilarious, in so many ways. Not one cliché unturned. Hollywood camp craft of the highest order. Why has this not attained camp icon status? Had I time or energy, I would rhapsodise at length, but will content myself with dreams of that magnificently, hideous grotesquerie of an orgy dance sequence. And those glitteringly deadly shields. And through it all, La Lollo's un-human physique and Yul's stoney-wood acting (oh, those heavy brows and dark broodings. Just a towering achievement.

I did stumble on this already in progress, and thought....whats this....Yul Brynner with hair???? Have seen him in only one other film with hair....

But as watching was thinking, as this film seemed to follow a lot of the same "formula" for other such films, why have I never seen this before???? Unsure if I had even heard of it before....

I was thinking about the group it was marketed for (if in fact this movie was not popular)....as in perhaps it is a bit too sultry for the religious crowd, and perhaps a bit too religious for the 'sultry' crowd.... Perhaps also as most of the film was pure 'poetic licence' with little that could be Biblically substantiated, perhaps that makes it less popular, than other such films which have more substantiation. (????)

As it progressed I did notice more what you are saying....yes the dance orgy was 'a bit' over the top, and etc. First time I have seen a Gina Lollobrigida
film, and know almost nothing about her....will have to look her up....

Oh man, what the hell was King Vidor thinking??? The only thing that coulda made it worse was if Chuck Heston had been in it.

I think he was thinking: Jesus H, our leading man has dropped dead; what the f... are we gonna do now? Vidor didn't like Brynner either, because from being an apparently subtler, multi-layered character, as written for and played by Tyrone Power, Brynner turned Solomon into a one dimensional mannequin. Vidor under the exceptional circumstances was unable to do anything about it.

What a tithead you are. Heston was the king of the epics!

yeah, it was campy as all get out. And too long. 2.5 hours! Why.

It's that epic saga of that era, but still. I love Yul, and I like the sultry-ness of Lollobrigida -- but let's face it, I REALLY just wanted to see them in a then-contemporary romance. This movie didn't really work for me.
