What type of food in the dinner scene?

What type of food is in the dinner scene early in the film, where Sasuke is eating with the animals at an outside table? It looks like potatoes or sweet potatoes that are in the bowl. Or is it maybe some vegetable specific to Japan, like a radish or leek or something? The food is grayish and looks like a tapered and twisted potato.
