Problem with ending

In the end, James Cagney becomes the bad guy and it's about good guys and bad guys. But with this story, it's not about good guys and bad guy or heroes and villains or who's right and who's wrong. I didn't really go for the ending how Cagney is all of a sudden the bad guy.

Seems like they were rushing to the ending. Cagney's character standing alone while the others followed the general towards peace would have been enough.

That's true.

But it wouldn't be much of a Cagney yarn without the character going to his own destruction. "Made it ma, top of the world!"
