that statue in the professor's exhibit was scary!

Anyone thought that the statue of that man with his mouth open in the professor's exhibit was creepy and scary? It cuts to a closeup and Wilby turns and looks at it when professor says something like 'interesting things use to happen to people every day.' That shot always frightened me as a child and I always turned away. I never understood what the statue was or who it is.
