Is there anyway to get the script of of Shadows?

I've checked online everywhere, can't seem to find it. Maybe someone can help me fine the screenplay?

there is no script. it was all improvised!

That's been debunked. Apparently Cassavetes used detailed scripts for all of his films.

All I can think about are dudes.

Who has debunked the improvisation claim? Much of this film is pretty obviously improvised, and it shows in the awkwardness of the interactions that the players are making it up and they go along – for the most part, at least.

Ray Carney says that John Cassavetes himself told him that the 1959 version of 'Shadows' was co-written by Cassavetes and Robert Alan Arthur. I have a feeling that the 'This film was an improvisation' declaration was left over from the 1957 version . . . but I can't claim that as anything more than a personal theory.

There has been a lot of misconceptions about Cassavetes' use of improvisation.

I'm inclined to believe the above poster's theory is probably more in line with the truth behind the writing of 'Shadows'.

I did see an interview with Gena Rowlands claiming that all the films post 'Shadows' were completely scripted, but that Cassavetes' would allow actors to improvise if it helped the performances look more natural.

However, most films that feature improvisation nearly always have a solid story/script as a blueprint for the actors to work from.

So to summarize: John Cassavetes films were all shot with a complete script - but which allowed actors licence to ad-lib along to the scene if it was faithful to the material.

According to Lelia Goldoni, who I spoke with today, no script was ever given to the actors in the film. Cassavetes would give them a situation & they would improvise the scene. She told me that he would say, "Okay, you go inside the house & have an argument with such-n-such."
