To be brutally honest, the film felt cheap, aimless and ultimately pointless. The realist approach was weakened by the fact that the dialogue was so poorly thought out and laughably delivered in most cases.

For those interested in Cassavetes and his career arc, it is certainly a worthwhile watch but it doesn't even come close to some of his later works.

When did she say she hated the film? I know she didn't like that someone found an alternate version of the film but I've never read that she hated the film.

Also it's pretty pathetic of you to claim she would hate it because she doesn't approve of interracial relationships, there are many reasons why she might not like it.

According to IMDB trivia section for Gena Rowlands:

(She)"Has suppressed the first version of her husband's (John Cassavetes) film Shadows (1959) and will neither allow it to be shown, nor acknowledge its existence."

"I told you a million times not to talk to me when I'm doing my lashes"!

I read somewhere long ago that even Cassavetes himself didn't think the original version of his film was all that good, because it had been mostly improvised. That's why he redid it again with an actual script, which the version we all know and like. I like the film because it's an indie flick, and totally different from any Hollywood flick of its era.
