Car

What kind of car was in the last scene of this movie?

reply

Not certain but I think it is a Jaguar from around 1956. Possibly the MK1.

Looks like a cloud while the modern version rides like one!

reply

It's not a Jag, trust me.

Best guess, it's a one off sports Humber. The front of this car is pure 1950s Humber.
Has to be a prototype. No badges on the car.

I seem to have taped, by error, only the first hour-twenty-minutes, so am missing the end of the movie although I watched it decades ago. The car driven by the chauffeur seems to be a Delahaye, possibly a Delage (both French makes, dying out by the 1950s).

I think cuzjackineanuckland is right and the car is probably a Delage. Take a look at some Delage models at:

It's a Daimler Green Goddess. http://www.daimler.co.uk/daimlermodels/html/greengoddess.htm has a photo.

It is one of the models designed to majke Daimler more popular instead of just a car for the royal family. Just right for a rich but dodgy French count :)

reply

Yup -- that definitely seems to be the one, all right.

Nice piece of detective work. I'll have to admit I was leaning toward some flavor of Delage from the late 40s or early 50s, but never could find one that quite fit the bill.

Don't know much about the Green Goddess, but I suspect they are about as rare as cars get.

I don't know, I looked at that photo of the Green Goddess and the grill doesn't seem to have the same extreme sweep over the top as the one in the movie and the back seat in the car in the movie seems a lot smaller. I'm certainly no expert. The links that everyone has provided were neat though. Some really beautiful cars.

I too was looking for a clue. In one shot I noticed the door handle at the front of the door, which means the hinges would be aft and the door would open from the front, similar to what we used to call suicide doors. In the photo of the car in the above web page, it clearly shows the door handle at the rear of the door. Anyone else notice?

See http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_329993-Delahaye-135-MS-1950.html

reply

It does seem to be the Delahaye, according to a couple of references.

reply

I reckon it's a one off Humber/Pullman. Headlight position and grill shape is incorrect for Delage or Daimler

reply

IT is a Delahaye 135m

I don't know what the car in last scene in the movie was. But I can tell you that in the book, if it was John's car, it was supposed to be a 1953 or 1954 Ford Consul. He said that he had two years in the book and the book was published in 1956. The DuGues had two cars. "An ancient Renaut" (as the Book called it) was the car that seem to be the head family car. But whenever Jean wanted to go out that car was always reserved for him. There was a Citroen that the rest of the family had used when Jean was using the Renault. Draw your own conclusions from that. The Ford consul look like the sportiest car from the pictures I can find of the cars from that era . The Renault looked like a rather a drab car. IMHO, the Citroen looked cooler.
