Too realistic film

It is sad that many people are like Joe. He compromises his whole life for money. He will never forget, or forgive himself for what he did to Alice. He had a chance to be himself but the attraction and ease of marrying Susan Brown made swept him. He was not ambitious he was greedy and even coward. Many people are just like him greedy and cowards. It is a well-done good movie that tells the story of the worst in us.

yes very sad, and simone signoret truly deserved the oscar for this, when you think her husband was having an affair with marylyn monroe at the time of filming , how much of her performance influenced by this? always makes me chuckle when i see this film was shot in my home town halifax , halifax to hollywood eh simone.

I agree with you 100%. I'd rather marry for love than money.

I think that Joe also wanted to best Mr. Brown and that odious boyfriend of Susan's. There was the issue of being a lower-class POW. I think the British government encouraged them to not escape but encouraged upper-class POWs to escape to great glory.

Joe's reverie about his attitude during his POW days was a clue as to how he would handle post-war life.

He was a bit of an adolescent but Alice thought that he had grown up. Unfortunately, he had not grown up enough.
