question about the dvd

I just watched this on dvd, and the night scenes were REALLY dark, To the point where I literally couldn't tell which actor was in the scene. I've seen this before on tv, and never noticed this before. Anyone else notice this?

Yes just watched the DVD and they were pretty dark but I didn't have much trouble figuring out which actor was in a scene. Well except the scene with the injured horse lying on the ground- It had to be in plain sight right in front of you but you really couldn't see the horse at all! I wonder if part of the problem is the use of the "day-for-night" filming technique which uses a filter to darken scenes shot in daylight to simulate nighttime. Never liked the look of it and the giveaway is all the sun shadows in these shots. I suppose were expected to think it's a full moonlit night, and it saves money not having to wait for dark to film nighttime scenes, besides not having to set up artificial lighting. These Boetticher/Scott productions were made on small budgets and pretty quickly- like in under 3 weeks.
