It's The Chief!

This is a wonderful, unintentionally hilarious movie that looks like it was made on a budget of $1.74. It's 1959, b&w, with terrible definition. The movie begins by trying to set the beatnik scene at a coffeehouse in LA, where bad poetry is accompanied by bongos and flute, and everyone wears shades after dark.

And lo and behold, the owner of the coffeehouse and local chess champion turns out to be The Chief from Get Smart! It only gets better from there, folks.

Everyone is compromised, but good will out in the end!

Just watched The Rebel Set, and yes it was so bad it was good, but not great, when it very well could have been.

The problem wasn't with the director, who was competent, or even low production qualities, it was fairly typical of a modestly produced B-movie, but the writing. The screenwriters (both of them) apparently only wrote half a screenplay. The exposition is good, the jazzy moods and hepcat characters kept my interest and I was gearing up for what could have been a cool beatnik b-flick, but by the time the "Set" board the train to Chicago for the heist, everything fell apart. The actual heist was disappointing and unimaginative and the chase was clearly tacked on to the end, and dragged out almost interminably, in what may have been a desperate attempt to increase the film's run-time. In the end, the movie feels like a wasted premise.

To be perfectly frank, the material would've been well-suited and better made as an episode of Peter Gunn or 77 Sunset Strip...

Now, 35 years later, It is a shame, what happened to Ed Platt. He was funny, and had talent, yet suffered from major depression that caused him to take his own life. This turkey was no showcase for him, but it was work, that he was willing to take at the time.
