Rene was such a bro.

Seriously one of the best friends in film history. Was always there for his friend, defended him, tried to find him shelter, even tried to visit him when he was locked up.

Everyone needs a Rene in their lives.

AWW *beep* IT'S WAYNE BRADY SON!

Totally agreed. He even (willingly) got expelled from the class by defending Antoine. René is the kind of friend many'd love to have.

They stayed close friends throughout their lives.
(Rene character is based on Truffaut's childhood friend Robert Lachenay.)

Oh? I didn't know that.

Here is a pic of two of them together as adults (Francois Truffaut is on the far left, Robert Lachenay is sitting opposite of him):

That is a nice picture.

Its that man again!!

My understanding is that Antoine in 400 Blows was based on Robert Lachaney. However, everyone assumes that Antoine is based on M. Truffaut.

Also, Truffaut & Lachaney have said that J-P Leaud brought a huge amount to the character of Antoine too. So, Antoine is his own character so to speak.
