Great film

Just saw a beautiful 35mm print of this film at the Museum of the Moving Image in NYC and it was great. This was the first theatrical screening in NY in over 40 years. I had seen it once before in 1959 and it is even better than I remembered it to be.

I think this film gets a bad rap just because a lot of the singers were dubbed and it came out at a time when people weren't flocking to see films with all balck casts, but I thought this film was just superb. A once in a lifetime film experience...not quite as good as CARMEN JONES but very close.

I sat through all four MMI screenings myself. I've had my two days of heaven.

I don't blame you for watching all 4 screenings. Other than this showing a year ago and maybe 1 or 2 others, the Gershwin estate, which owns the rights, has prevented the screening of the film, in any form at all. Supposedly, because it's not the "pure", uncut opera the Gershwins created. It's all very odd though, as this would be the perfect introduction to Porgy and Bess for many people, and would encourage more CD sales and live presentations of the opera.
