How does this movie end?

A few years ago, American Film Institute put out a list of the 100 greatest love stories in American cinema history. I have since all of them but this one (Yes, I have no life. However, none of the movie are ones I wouldn't have watched anyway). I'm trying to determine how many of those films end with the couple together and, if not, if it's because one or both of them dies. I feel I can't do it until I learn the outcome of this movie. So does the main couple end up together?

Sportinlife seduces Bess with "happy dust' and lures her to go with him to New York. (There's a Boat thats Leaving, Soo-oon For New York) Porgy in desperation when he learns of Bess's leaving (on his board) sets out alone on what may be a hopeless journey to find her. (O-o Lord, I'm on My Way)

This is a tremendous Opera but American audiences found it more palpatable to see it with just the songs and the recitatives were removed for the Broadway Stage production. This tradition was carried over into the movie. So what's the beef? The public deserved this musical to be released and these artists who are American Icons need to be seen in these roles. Please release this now before it is gone forever. I was a music student when I first became aware of Gershwin through the movie -Rhapsody in Blue-, I need to seek this one out again. I was so enamored of Gershwins music I had to have the original Decca cast album and then ordered and purchased the complete musical score to the oper, so you can see I was anxiously awaiting the release of the film. I was not disappointed. I waorked in a music store the year the film was released and can remember all of the cover albums by various artists that hit the market in '59. I still recall ella and louis reditions with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. I still treasure these.

I vote that you should complete your top 100 along with the rest of the world. Release Porgy and Bess now. They have been hostages long enough!!

Porgy should have sung, "There's a goat that's leaving soon for New York".

Oh I do so agree with having this film released, especially on DVD.

There has been a revivial of the stage musical in New York and has been welcomed with open arms. One of the featured players won a Tony. It is time
for a new generatioin of open minded adults and children to view this magnificent spectacle regardless of who sang what and who was dubbed. The performances speak for themselves.

Needless to say I was in total shock when I found out Deborah Kerr's voice was dubbed by Marni Nixon in the King and I.
