'Porgy' on TV?

I may be crazy, but I'm quite sure I saw this movie on TV when I was 9 or 10, meaning it was 1965 or '66. Because we had a black-and-white TV, that's how I viewed it. This was when ABC showed films on Sunday nights. If the Gershwin estate hated the film so much, why would they have allowed its TV showing? Or was I imagining things?

It was on TV in 1967 and pulled from release in 1974.

I saw it also on ABC's Sunday Night Movie.

I wish I had a Kryptonite cross, because then I could keep Dracula & Superman away.

I knew it! Thanks for the confirmation, folks. Just thought I'd seen it earlier.

You're not crazy. It was shown on the ABC Sunday Night Movie in March of 1967. That was its only network TV showing. I was a teenager then and I saw the first five minutes.

This was probably a package deal with Goldwyn before the rights reverted. Goldwyn's GUYS AND DOLLS was also shown on the ABC Sunday Night Movie that same season.

Shown once in Britain in the early 70s as I remember.

It was on multiple times in the 60's and very early 70's until it was pulled. It's such a wonderful film, albeit heartbreaking!

I bought the DVD from Flashback DVD a few years ago. At that time they're the only ones that had it. It might be available now through other vendors, I don't know.

reply

It's available on youtube! As long as it isn't taken down, it will always be free from the uploaded users.

reply

That's good to know, thanks. It wasn't available anywhere in any format a few years ago when I bought the DVD from that company. They specialize in hard to get movies.

YouTube is a very good place to find really old, otherwise lost films that aren't sold on tape/dvd/or available on streaming. Unfortunately, the film is in very poor quality, but it's better than nothing.

Also, I'm pretty sure half of the movie is missing.
