Albert Camus

Someone described this film as having the atmosphere of an Albert Camus novel. I believe, however, that Camus was a nihilist and Bresson was a practicing Christian...so any ideas?

Also, what are the visuals in the film like? Are they very scenic and beautiful?

reply

Not really. Prett regular visuals. Banal.

That's what I thought too, as per "L'Étranger".

I just wrote that I felt the same thing in another thread.

yeah, he himself declared to be more of an absurdist than an existentialist, differing from satre in a number of areas. he was most definitely not a nihilist and criticises nihilism in 'the rebel'. he said to negate was a act of rebellion not abandon and nihilism.

i haven't seen the movie yet but by going through the discussion and reading the comments all i could think of albert camus and his book the stranger. also most certainly im gonna love this movie; i can sense that. jean luc godard called it a great movie. and being a godard fan i know its something special.

Bresson once referred to himself as a "Christian-atheist.

Bresson examines nihilism in all his films. Even though he might not embrace the same spiritual ideals of Camus he is as interested in them as Camus. Michel embodies a Camus character and he is another example of the outsider, the person cut off from the flow of their society, which has been a hallmark of all the Bresson films I've watched thus far.

The visuals of the film are clear and, as with the best b&w, they have depth.
