This is the most beautiful movie I've ever seen!!!

Although it ends in tragedy, I still feel good after watching it. I never get tired of it, classic!

wish there were more movies like this. wonder what happened to the actors, anybody know?

reply

Good question....since i can't read portuguese, even if i found the information, i prolly couldnt even read it!!!

The film was made with an unprofessional cast. The actors only appeared in a few other roles. Thats why its almost impossible to say what they are doing now.
Breno Mello was a soccer pro. Maybe he returned to sport.
Marpessa Dawn (Gypsy) originally was a dancer - performed in the company of Katherine Dunham - but didnt pursue her career later on. She actually married Marcel Camus and was his wife when this film was made.
Later she moved to Paris, France to join the african american community.
There she remained unnoticed.

Would be interesting to know where she is now.

Double Feature Dolls writes:

"This bronze beauty from Pittsburgh, PA found herself basking in the world's spotlight after a magnificent performance in the 1959 French produced film Black Orpheus. A retelling of the tragic mythical Greek love story between Orpheus and Eurydice, this film version takes place during Carnival in modern Rio De Janeiro.

The film received widespread critical acclaim, including an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. Critics also praised Marpessa's talent, and it seemed a no-brainer that this sexy sun goddess was well on her way to Hollywood stardom.

Unfortunately, the calls never came, and Marpessa would remain a forgotten talent in Europe. With the exception of a few obscure foreign films, Black Orpheus would be her one and only starring vehicle." (http://macumbalove.tripod.com/id14.html)

I agree that this is the most beautiful film I have ever seen. The combination of scenery, actors, and music are unsurpassed in my experience. (Another film of "impossible love" stands second in this combination in my view, Brokeback Mountain. I made a point of seeing it several times in a theater because I knew the video format would be far inferior.) I saw Black Orpheus a dozen times in theaters. The Portuguese language version is much better: the sound of the language fits with the music. I met Ademar da Silva (Death) in Chicago at the Pan American Games in 1959 and spent a fair amount of time with him over two plus weeks. I was in charge of the residence hall at the University of Chicago where the Brasilian team was housed. Ademar told me about the film but I did not see it until after the Games were over. I have always been sorry about missing the oportunity to question him about the film. Because he was the only Brasilian at the time to hold an Olympic Gold Medal, he did very much as he pleased. On the first night, after the general and the businessman who were in charge of the team told them at a group meeting that all had to go to bed, Ademar told me he was hungry and asked me to take him and his best friend, a member of the basketball team, to a local restaurant. When I questioned the general's order, Ademar said he paid no attention to such things. The whole experience with the team was wonderful. I regret that I have never had the funds to visit Brasil.

Can somebody please tell me if the Criterion Release of this movie has the Original Portuguese soundtrack or a French Dubbed one?

Thanks!

reply

I know this is a late reply, but the Criterion release is in Portuguese.

I just read that Bruno Mello, who plays Orpheus, was found dead in his apartment (July 18 08). Apparently he lived his last years in solitude and poverty. Very sad.

reply

The same here.

reply

It's truly too bad, because Marpessa is really one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen in a film.

Anyway, great movie, great music, great everything.

reply

Yes it was absolutely beautiful...

I agree

Thanks for responding guys. I love this movie so much that when I saw this board I almost got upset that no one had posted anything, so I started this thread. It's so great that there ARE other people that enjoyed this movie as much as I did. (I still can't get over how adorable the kids are at the end, especially the little girl dancing.)

Some people have been suggesting other similar movies that are set in Brazil. Since I love this one so much, will I be dissapointed watching those? Do any compare to this one?

reply

Agree… what a fantastic movie.

Last summer I watched the documentary 'À la recherche d'Orfeu Negro' on the french/german TV-channel ARTE. I really can recommend the documentary…

reply

Yes, the children at the end. The wallop of Greek tragedy conveyed in children's faces and actions. I saw this in 61 or 62 and have never seen it again, but I can never forget it. Near perfection in moviemaking. Great to see all the approving comments of praise.

I recommend "Bye Bye Brazil":http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080482/

This is a magnificent film, and is a genuine work of art in its ability to "work" on so many different levels of meaning. It is also one of the most outstanding examples of color cinematography, at once completely natural and unforced and yet not without its "poetic" and symbolic moments as well (a la Powell and Pressburger).

reply

This film is on constantly in my panoramic mind. "Beauty" is but the ugly stepsister to the word that can best describe this film.

This is your life and its ending one minute at a time.

reply

A greatfilm--I agree. I originally saw it on a double bill with "Pixote" a 1980s film that showed the DARK side of Rio dealing with prostitutes and kids who became killers. Purportedly that's the side of Rio that is accurate. Still I prefer this film.

reply

AFI in Washington showed a new print of the film in its largest theater. This film should be seen on the big screen; great sound, great energy, great cinema. The myth and film are tragedy and beauty; the last frames of the film are full of hope and possibility.

just saw this movie last night on tv. Normally I would change the channel when there is a movie that old on, but I have to say, i was hooked. The first thought that came to my mind was "what a beautiful movie" The setting was awesome. You kind of felt like you were there. Also how beautiful was Mira, the fiance of Orpheus. She would be a knock out today.

reply

Pixote is set in Sao Paulo... that's why it is so different.

Where did you see this movie? As a child this movie used to air on TV around Easter time. It's probably been over 30 years since I've seen it, but I remember it vividly. I got caught up in the pulse of the movie early on and enjoyed it from beginning to end. I've never seen the original "Orpheus" and I base my knowledge of the tale of the star-crossed lovers solely on this movie. I'm so glad you enjoyed it too.

reply

Awesome movie! Captivating, mesmorizing. This movie draws you in with the vibrant color, vivid characters and infectious music and dance! The story ends leaving you feeling sad for the lovers, but then happy as the sun rises with a new Orpheus!

I'm so glad I bought this dvd. I'll watch it over and never get tired of it!

Halle Berry is a dead ringer for Marpessa Dawn.

reply

Agreed. Saw it last night for the first time in 25 years and it is still a masterpiece.

reply

I saw the Criterion blu-ray of this film last night. It looks tremendous. There is a French language interview with Marpessa Dawn from the period of the film. Her French sounds almost native--she talks about coming from Pittsburgh and going to France, working in England too.

it is a very good one indeed

truly stunning, to say the least. As much as I can appreciate the subtitled flick, I prefer the dubbed, because I can watch everything that's going on without dicking around reading the subtitles. There's a lot happening in this movie.
