I haven't read this book or seen this movie in a very long time. Did any of the characters try to reach Tasmania? Hobart is on the southeast side of the island, so I'm sure people there would have lasted a few weeks longer.

In the book, Dwight Towers talks about the possibility of taking his crew to Hobart, and dismisses it, saying, "We could never be operational there. We'd just be refugees."
