Why only Australia spared?

If the nuclear war was confined to the northern hemisphere, why does only Australia survive? What about sub-saharan Africa and South America? Was this addressed in the movie or book?

Because Melbourne is the most southern Majir city. I just finished the movie. It is Scarry to think this is becoming more of a possibility with this past election.

The book addressed it. Australia wasn't the only country in the southern hemisphere that was still habitable. There was mention of South Africa, New Zealand. The scientist said that the very last people to die would be the inhabitants of Tierra del Fuego.

and iirc, there was the foggiest of hints that a few researchers in Antarctica might survive for a very short while...
