Television

I just watched Good Morning again yesterday, and I am more convinced then ever that it is one of my favorite Ozu films and (therefore) one of my favorite overall films.

I am intrigued by the relationship between this movie and television. Obviously, television plays an important role in the plot. But I think that the style of the movie itself is very much indebted to television. In particular, the style is very reminiscent of television sitcoms. The boys' silent protest, the gossiping neighbors could all be subplots on an episode of Leave it to Beaver or the Brady Bunch.

I think that Ozu was very much intending to make a movie (like many of his movies) about the transition going on in Japan at the time, and nothing better exemplified that than television. The look and feel of this movie is so different from other Ozu (not just because it's in color, and not just because it's a comedy). I think that it is a total success.

Then again this might all be a coincidence and I might be wrong.

Not sure Ozu would have had much opportunity to be influenced by many TV sitcoms living in Japan up to the 1950s.
