Sister Luke question

I just saw this movie on DVD two days ago. At the end of this movie it shows Sister Luke leaving the Nunhood (or whatever the proper name is). I'm confused because when Audrey was filming this movie she met Sister Luke in The Congo (according to The Audrey Hepburn Story movie). Sister Luke I thought was dressed as a Nun. Can anyone help me out with this question.

Thanks

Anna

I haven't seen the Audrey Hepburn bio movie so I can't respond to that.

There might be some confusion because some nurses back then did wear something like a veil and, in England at least, nurses were (are still?) addressed as "Sister".

A long time ago, nurses, even though they were not nuns, were not permitted to marry. This was not unusual for most professional women at the time.

So you can see where the confusion might arise.

The Nun's Story, the book and the movie, is a fictionalized account. Sister Luke may not have left the convent when the novel said she did.

Otherwise, the Audrey Hepburn movie may be anachronistic for dramtatic effect.

Perhaps another poster has better knowledge of this.

She was no longer a sister when Hepburn met her.
