books

I have read and seen the movie a few times. Does anyone know of any other books or films that have similiar story/plot?

reply

The only two movies that I can think of and they are both true stories are "the Sound of Music", of course and "The Singing Nun" oh yeah "Change of Habit" though that's not a true story. All three are about nuns and conflict.

Try In This House of Brede (Demi Moore named her daughter after author Rumer Godden). Never saw it, but the book was great.

reply

See it, it's excellent.

The book In This House of Brede is wonderful (read it 3 times), a very detailed fictional account of life in a Benedictine cloistered convent. The film (was it a PBS production?) is okay, but pales in comparison.

The author, Rumer Godden, also wrote The Black Narcissus , again about nuns and convent life, made into a film of the same name with Deborah Kerr.

I will also give a thumbs-up to "In This House of Brede," although it has been many years since I read it.

If anyone is interested in nuns in general and their internal (and external) struggles, you should check out the Australian TV mini-series "Brides of Christ" (filmed in 1991 but set in the 1960s).

reply

Brides of Christ was good and, if I'm not mistaken, a young Russell Crowe was in it.
