Wow. Is this the most underrated movie series ever?

I recently got a box set containing all three Human Condition films and have watched them all during the last couple of days. I have to agree with most of the comments and reviews I can find about these movies: they're amazing and wonderful pieces of filmmaking.

However, there don't seem to be a lot of comments and reviews about these movies ... The three of them have about 600 votes each on idmb, the wikipedia entry is really short, and I can hardly find anything about them on the internet. One could think, as these are quite epic war films and by a famous Japanese director, that these would be considered classics all over the world, but no ... They don't seem to be well-known at all.

Which is odd. And a shame.

But it did happen

More like a tragedy. A lot of people respond quite obtusely to this movie, so maybe it's for the best. Guess most people would rather watch inane films like inception.

This board is so in-active I don't know if there's any point in even responding (proving the OP's point, I guess) but I must agree. Now, I'm a huge film buff, but my biggest shortcoming is that I have very little patience for long films. Consequently, when I first got this out I was planning to just sample a few scenes of part one as part of a Japanese-made WWII film kick I was on (and, to be honest, as part of a 'major crush on Tatsuya Nakadai' kick I was on). Instead I watched the entire first dvd in one sitting and got the other two out immediately.

I have to presume it's the length that puts people off, which is something I can sympathise with, but every review I've seen mentions that you will speed through--definitely my own experience. Weird that if this were a tv series it would seem extremely short! When I've been recommending it to people I've told them to think about it that way, but I've not managed to convince anyone yet. I find that even my fellow film-geeks laugh in disbelief when I open a pitch with 'so, it's a nine and a half hour Japanese film trilogy set during WWII...' Extremely intimidating!

I found this completely heartwrenching--I feel empty and miserable knowing I don't have more to watch, could have done with another three hours!

It's true what you say.
I'm pretty sure the fact that it's over 9 hours takes the motivation out of a large population.

However, this could easily be transformed into a series of 6 episodes. They even separate this into part I, part II...
