There is an OOP DVD right. But it is way expensive and I dod not know about the quality. People! please write to Criterion to release the Human COndition 1, 2, and 3 in a box set!

AMEN!!! AAAAAAAAAAMEN!!!

I actually found a DVD and bought it on amazon.com. It's distributed by image entertainment and I bought it for 78 bucks (it's not manufactured anymore). 78 bucks for only number one. The other 2 are about 400 bucks put together. Craziness.

We really need Criterion to release it...

Is there even anywhere to get a bootleg or anything? I mean...I don't support this, but god-geezus!! I have no other way to ever see this! Retarded.

reply

There are torrents available. Search for them (not that I support that kind of thing..) I believe the source is the OOP Image DVDs. The aspect ratio is right, but the subs are a bit off. Still watchable though.

as I just posted in the other thread, I just watched it on a DVD that I borrowed from my local library system. Try interlibrary loan if you're in the U.S.

Yes, a Criterion version will be great, but this was an incredibly powerful experience for me as it is on DVD now.

I complain too much. That teacher don't like me. Now it's your turn.

(as I wrote in other thread)

How do I do that Interlibrary loan stuff?

reply

Go to your local library. Tell the librarian what you want to borrow. If they don't have it, they can request it from another library in their local library district. (My library district is about a quarter of our state.) If the local district doesn't have it, they can do a search and see if it is available from any other library in the USA. Unfortunately DVDs aren't always made available for out-of-the-district loans.

At my library, the catalog for the entire district is online, which is really great. Most libraries have a similar system. I search for something, and if they have it in the district, I request it. Then they email me when it has arrived at the local library. VERY convenient. If it isn't in the district I have to go to the library and have a librarian search for it. Good luck!

I'm tired of waiting for Criterion, so I'm going the ILL route on the older copy. I've had luck getting books from other libraries in state, but I'm just now testing it out to see if the system will provide a copy for me to borrow...and it appears that it will have to be out of state for this one. The wait could be over a month, but hopefully not so long. I will post here if I luck out!

reply

I won't be able to get the movie after all...I guess my library system doesn't allow out-of-state borrowing on movies.

reply

The quality is surprisingly good considering how rare and unavailable the DVD is. I would be happy to see criterion release it, I'd be thrilled, but I haven't seen any more details on its future release.

I am hoping they do though, its a film I greatly admire.

Last film seen: The Human Condition 1 10/10

There is a spanish edition with spanish subtitles. It's a box set with the three movies.

You can find it in www.fnac.es

I picked the Image Entertainment trilogy on ebay for £60. It is so hard to find this set now it's unbelievable. As much a I covet these fantastics dvds it would be nice to have criterion release this. then there might be a chance that one person on facebook would recognise my profile pic!

Ok right now in NYC, the Film Forum is going to do a 3 week run of the Human Condition starting late July. I heard from one of the people who work for Criterion but the release print for the screenings are under Janus so it's very likely that it will get a Criterion release very soon! HURRAH!!

reply

not to brag, but i just came from seeing all 3 parts in one day at film forum in nyc!!! wow. wow. wow. hope it comes out on criterion soon so it can start cracking everyone's all time greatest films list.

reply

Damn your lucky. I was thinking of doing the same.

reply

just talked with janus (distributor), they said that criterion had the intention of releasing the trilogy, but have recently come across certain legalities that are going to prevent them from doing so. best bet would be to try and see it in it's limited run in theaters (just played briefly in new york), or on dvd (the image entertainment dvd's are a little steep because they are out of print, but the transfers are actually pretty good; they are in the proper aspect ratio's). anyway, that's all.

reply

You gotta be kidding me!

reply

i wish i were kidding you, daikengox. this is one of my favorite films (if speaking collectively), so i would like nothing more than to have cleaned up prints by criterion, but it just isn't going to happen. like i already said, your best bet would be to see it in theaters. it'll be around for about another month, in various cities. other than that, your only option is the image entertainment releases. there are imports, but they cost a ton, they are of different region codes, and they don't have english subtitles. i think i am going to pick up the image releases. they have recently gone down in price a little. you can get the entire trilogy on amazon for about $300.

reply

Wow, less than a year after the last post in this discussion, The Human Condition was released on DVD by Criterion in a beautiful edition, yet no one here ended up getting it? It's about three years later as I write this, so I'm hoping no one got suckered into buying overpriced OOP editions and were able to get the Criterion Edition instead.

reply

Now i just need to wait for it to be released in region 2! Come on BFI!
