Somewhat Overrated

For a number of years, this trilogy has been almost unavailable in the US. Fortunately Criterion has just released a quite satisfactory DVD set of the film.

Having just sat through all 10+ hours of The Human Condition, I must confess that I felt the movie to be somewhat overrated. While clearly an important movie, it simply does not live up to the encomium of one critic that it is the greatest movie ever made. Still, it is worth watching, both for its great theme of humans adjusting themselves as they live their lives and from the narrower perspective of Japanese society circa 1960 as it still wrestled with the war.

...and that's worth its own thread? Couldn't you have posted this (paltry) opinion in an already-existing thread on "disappointment?" Yeah.

I hate it when people say things like "it simply isn't this" or "ACTUALLY your wrong and I am right", or "it certainly wasn't great" and "this DEFINITELY wasn't great", and every other exasperating adverb conceited people use to give their pontifications emphasis. I don't know whether or not this is the greatest film ever made, and neither do you, so kindly refrain in future from making a spectacle of your vanity. The problem is, this self-importance is so popular in our degenerate era that people take it for granted. I wish these people would condescend to the level of us mere mortals once in a while!

Haha, hit the nail on the head there rhowells. I pretty much wrote this guy off when he called the Criterion Collections release of this film "quite satisfactory".

overrated? HAHA. Look at the votes.. less than 1000.. and so few topics. no one barely knows this film's existence.. how it can be overrated??

reply

That doesn't mean it can't be overrated. It seems to be well known by people interested in film.

reply

Well yea.. You're right. But seeing all the praise here for this movie and the ratings (almost 9), It's not overrated at all.. Movies like Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption are overrated, but not this trilogy.

Underrated, perhaps.

It's overrated because you didn't think it was as good as one critic said it was?

I haven't seen the sequels yet but perhaps your reason for the dislike was watching the trilogy in such a short period of time.
