Has anyone seen it and any other Russian sci fi?

I love Russian Sci Fi. As a matter of fact I love the cheesy Italian stuff too, for the obvious reasons. Does anyone else out there share this view? And if so what's your favorite movie?

I also enjoy Soviet-era science fiction films. Another title I highly recommend is 'Planeta Bur' (1962). This is Russian Sci-Fi at its finest. To truly experience these USSR classics, one must see them in their original, non-spliced, and non-dubbed forms.

This is to say, be leery of the US releases of many such pictures. In the 1960's, Roger Corman and American International Pictures began the process of buying foreign films and reediting them for a US audience. Many of the central ideologies of these films were lost in the process, meaning they were edited out completely or rearranged by Corman and his cronies. This was most likely due to foreign relations of the era (not to mention the editing itself of these "new films" was poor at best). Such ventures resulted in cinematic-monstrosities such as 'Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet' (1965), 'Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women' (1968), and the subject of this post, 'Battle Beyond the Sun' (1963). Roger Corman and his cronies may have produced some of the greatest cult pictures of all time throughout the 1950's and 1960's, but they also partook in the soiling of many wonderful foreign films. Such spectacular films as 'Planeta Bur' (1962) and 'Nebo zovyot' (1960) deserve to be treated with much more reverence.

I,ve seen the original Solaris and I dig the atmosphere of it, and one I believe was called Black Rainbow. I don't remember much about Black Rainbow except that I liked it and part of it had something to do with children coming up with items demonstrating advanced, even unfathomable technology(somewhat like Tommyknockers). I'm thinking this was from about '73, but I can never find any information about a Russian Black Rainbow. This ring a bell with anyone?

I'm not certain what film you are talking about. If I happen to stumble across it, I will be sure to let you know!

'Stalker' (1979) is indeed brilliant. I was lucky enough to see it recently on the big screen.

as others have mentioned here, tarkovsky's "solaris" is brilliant, prob my fave sci-fi alongside kubrick's "2001" and scott's "bladerunner", not to mention nicoll's "gattaca"... i'm yet to see "stalker", but very keen to!

with other russian sci-fi and other early russian films, there's a special on at melbourne cinémathèque @ acmi at the moment, i just finished watching::

- "The Heavens Call" (1959) - , years before Kubrick's attempt tho quite cheesy and b-grade to today's standard. still an entertaining watch

plus other shorts which are more fantasy or early stop motion shorts::

"Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka" (1961)
"The Cameraman's Revenge " (Ladislas Starewicz, 12 mins, 1912)
"Interplanetary Revolution" (Z. Komissarenko, U. Merkulov & N. Hodataev, 9 mins, 1924)

i am to watch some titles, which have been mentioned in this thread::

"To the Stars by Hard Ways" (Richard Viktorov, 1981/2001)
"The Amphibian Man" (Gennadi Kazansky & Vladimir Chebotarev, 1962)
"Cosmic Voyage" (V. Zhuravlev, 1936)

'Cherez ternii k zvyozdam' (1981) is a wonderful film. I have not seen 'Chelovek-Amfibiya' (1962), but would indeed like to look into it. I am having trouble finding the 'Cosmic Voyage' film you mentioned on IMDb. Can you provide a link?

reply

thaks for the link for that 1981 film, will hunt it down!

with "cosmic voyage", it seems it goes under a few different names, but "cosmic voyage" isn't in imdb as a variation, only:

Cosmic Journey International (informal title) (English title)
Cosmic Voyage Denmark (festival title)
The Space Ship (undefined)
The Space Voyage International (DVD title) (English title)

the link is http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0252612/ or check out senses of cinema review as that's quite an extensive insight:: http://www.sensesofcinema.com/contents/cteq/07/43/cosmic-voyage.html

Thanks for the information. In regard to 'Cherez ternii k zvyozdam' (1981), it is the same title you named in your previous post ('To the Stars by Hard Ways' (1981)). "Cherez ternii k zvyozdam" is the original Russian title. I highly recommend it.

By the way, the picture quality I found was very good. All DVDRips, with the exception of "The Way to the Stars" and "Moon".

I'm not sure if it was included in your list but another excellent Soviet sci-FI film is "A Dream Comes True.". This movie provided much of the footage for Corman's PLANET OF BLOOD aka QUEEN OF BLOOD (1966). My personal favorite Soviet space movies are ROAD TO THE STARS (1958) and THE HEAVENS CALL (1959). Of course, all of them are good. Love those spacesuit/spaceship/space station designs. Great visual effects in all of them.
