Columbia Girl

Who is the girl with the torch that steps up (in reverse motion) to the pedestal after the end credits? Is this the only movie made where this happens?

reply

It wasn't a girl. It was a woman.

reply

PC Police at work once again...... :)

reply

Oh boy, here we go again. She's not a girl, not yet a woman.

Speaking of the Columbia mascot (can we call a female a mascot?), how many films have spoofed that torch-bearer? The only ones that come to mind immediately are this one and Joan Crawford's "Berserk," in which she's headless in keeping with the film. There must be a lot more.

reply

OP: You did see her at the beginning, right? She hikes up her gown and jumps off the podium seeing a *mouse* at her feet (the ending is just that in reverse).

Re. other spoofs - not quite one, but the Monkees' "Head" ends its end credits with a vintage version of the logo just before an effects shot where the film gets stuck and melts in the projector...
...Cartoon Network had a series of bumpers for movie presentations, one being the Columbia girl's gown getting blown up ala 'The Seven Year Itch'.

reply

Cat Ballou has a good one, in which the Columbia mascot suddenly morphs into an animated, female gunslinger.

reply

Cool! Coincidentally, I just bought "Cat Ballou" this week. I'll look for the Columbia gunslinger.

reply

Is the Columbia Mascot (the young woman who modeled for it) still alive? I saw a short interview of her a few years ago and she was still an attractive lady.

reply

Wow, they used a real model? What was the venue when you saw an interview with the Columbia lady recently? I'm sure they had her re-create the pose.

I don't know if she's still alive, but I suspect not. I hope she signed a good royalty agreement.

reply

The film with the headless Columbia lady was Strait-Jacket

reply

You're right: "Strait-Jacket," not "Berserk." I always get those films mixed up. Thanks.

reply

Anyway "Berserk." was one of Joan's last films.

Almost forgot Back when "Strait-Jacket," and "I Saw What You Did"
played the local houses Joan made Appearances. For ISWYD her young co-stars were with her, check the link.

Love that photo, love those fawning fans, love the hair, love the lips!

You were lucky to see "I Saw What You Did." I'd love to get my hands on that one.

Were you the one who said William Castle sent a response to your fan letter?

reply

Well the film was a bit of a letdown, it was remade once or twice. Anyway Joan's role is a small one. The blond and the other girl were the co-stars Sara Lane and
Andi Garrett don't ask me which is which. They had very short careers.

No I'm not the one with the fan letter.

Anyway I never write fan letters however I did leave msgs on Sean Connery's
and George Takei web pages some years back.

I met George at a Sci Fi convention in 1982 the year STAR TREK II came out
Funny enough at the time I was working at Paramount Pics New York office computer rm. (1981 to 1986)
When I told him about that he asked me if there was anything I could do to PGM the system for a new Star Trek show.

WELL?

No I had nothing to do with that just kidding

Love the photo of George Takei, and what great taste he has in turtlenecks and sport jackets! Then again, I made some questionable fashion choices in the '80s. He certainly thought you had a lot of pull with Paramount.

Even if the film is a letdown I wish it was available on video or DVD. A lot of William Castle's later films are unavailable.

I had kind of a weird deja vu when you were talking about "I Know What You Did" that you may have been someone who was talking about William Castle a few months ago, writing him and getting a response. Oh well.

reply

You do know William died years ago?

Yes, he died in 1977, but people still talk about him today, as we are.

Part of WarpedRecord's post:

Aside from the already-mentioned Cat Ballou, there's the 1978 disco movie, Thank God It's Friday. The Columbia 'Torch Lady' does some dance stepping while the music starts.

reply

Thanks for the reminder! Now that you mention it, I remember the torch lady in "Thank God It's Friday.

reply

I believe that one of the 3 Stooges' movies also spoofs the Columbia opening --- possibly "The Three Stooges Meet Hercules."

"A bride without a head !"
"A wolf without a foot !"

Your post reminded me of the Universal logo in the beginning of "Waterworld"

http://youtu.be/2UQBzleE_II

There was also a 20th Century Fox - either "Smoky & The Bandit" or "Cannonball Run" where there was a brief animated car chase up the logo.

Nope, it was cannonball run.

Also, my friends and I used to argue endlessly about the beginning of "Ghostbusters" - it looked like the Columbia statue wavered (like a ghost) as the opening eerie music/sound effects played. I argued that it was just the strecthed video tape (yeah, I'm that old) causing the illusion, but my friends were sure it was part of the film.

and of course, since I'm Canadian, I have to mention "Strange Brew"'s opening MGM logo - I always thought Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis were brave to stand there and much around with the lion.

If I think of anymore I'll be sure to add them.
