Funny Film, but Just Misssed the Mark

Peter Sellers was an acting treasure. His sense of humor always seemed a combination of restraint and being on the verge of busting out laughing. His characters were oblivious to the chaos around them. but sincere in their desire to go on Quixotic quests.

The Mouse that Roared provides the perfect venue for Sellers to practice the role he would later play in the Pink Panther movies. His ability to play multiple characters and give each of them weight is a real treat. The plot itself is kind of senseless while also being kind of timeless. Considering how much aid we send to other countries, this movie could have been made today and still been topical. Consider even the bomb raid drill they did. In light of the events of 9/11, its not inconceivable that New York City might shut down for a day on President's orders to do a drill. I would love to see a remake of this movie. Just don't know who would play the roles Seller did to perfection.

My main beef with the movie is it veers too far into farce once the soldiers return to Grand Fenwick. The end scene with everyone throwing around the bomb like a football just ruined the goodwill built up. Up to that point, the movie had a nice little thing going making me think the plot is so silly it might actually work.

My memory foam pillow says it can't remember my face. I can tell its lying.
