Hardly seems acceptable today let alone an acceptable conversation in 1959.

A few people have such an honest relationship with their parents, that they can talk candidly with them about anything. It's kind of refreshing that she's able to be so frank with him. She's concerned about her father's welfare, there's nothing shameful about about it. They're both grownups.
