Not trying to be a wise guy...but aren't these folks...

...supposed to be Jewish? The garment industry in NYC was still heavily Jewish at that time, and some of the first and last names are Jewish, though not all of them.

And many of the expressions are very common to older Jewish men and women of that era--"tootsie" and "middle-aged fling" and even "Jerk! Jerk!" Which, on Broadway, was probably "Shmuck! Shmuck!"

Betty and her friends and relatives are obviously NOT Jewish. I guess the age difference was already heavy enough...they didn't need the "alter kacker boss-and- the young shiksa" angle on top of the age bit. But Jerry's family, and his partners, and that widow, especially...so Jewish you could plotz, already. Oy!

This is painfully obvious when you see and hear the yelling and screaming and arguing in his apartment. Made me feel right at home. Nu, boychik, you don't wanna know.

Paddy Chayefsky went for the trifecta in the Fifties...he covered the three dominant New York ethnicities very well. Marty was Italian, the Hurleys in The Catered Affair are Irish, and this film deals with the Jews.

Can anyone, with a straight face, say that this film was NOT supposed to be about Jews? Ya gotta be kiddin' me!

Betty and her friends and relatives are obviously NOT Jewish.

Why is that obvious?

If you are seriously asking that question, and not just yanking my chain, it's clear to me that you are obviously not OOTT...one of the tribe.

I'm serious. (And I'm also not OOTT.)

For heaven's sake, I'm Jewish, and I honestly think Betty Preisser was supposed to be Jewish. The thing is, Kim Novak was no Fredric March, to put it mildly ... so while March acted very Jewish, without overdoing it (a truly great performance), it was beyond Kim Novak's ability.

But there's absolutely nothing to indicate that the character wasn't supposed to be Jewish, and I think she was.

The movie is based on the play where the interfaith aspect of the relationship is tackled (whereas in the movie it's downplayed and has to be read "between the lines"). Here's a review of the February 2014 off Broadway revival of Middle of the Night http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/01/theater/middle-of-the-night-a-paddy- chayefsky-play.html

So the current off-Broadway revival has both the age AND the interfaith angles? Cool! Same as in the original 1956 production, I am assuming...

Amazing that its run is RIGHT NOW...February and March of 2014. Looks like it got a fairly positive review, as well.

I was wondering the same thing. C'mon - what kind of garmento is named "Kingsley?"

I'll be honest, I had a hard time with this film in general, despite truly excellent performances from everyone involved and my great love of Marty. I found Jerry self-righteous, self-pitying, and annoying in general and Betty immature and needy. Had he met a similarly immature and needy woman who didn't look as good or closer to his own age (and yeah, we know his late wife had been immature), he wouldn't have bothered, so despite wanting to make an honest woman of her, the attraction was still that of a dirty old man. He wants to be loved by a woman? Please. He wants to be loved by a hot piece of ass and is lucky enough to find one that's willing. We're led to believe that Walter's wife is a harpy but what are the chances that she acts that way because she's sick of her husband making an ass of himself chasing young tail? And then he attempts suicide because he can't get it? Although it wasn't as easy back then, divorce was an option. And then Jerry's self-righteous boast "I happen to be involved with a younger woman myself" after "comforting" Walter's family by telling them their husband and father had been dead for years, presumably because younger women found him the annoying old goat that he was. Horrible. I was so primed to like this and it ended up being a total turnoff.

I didn't see the whole thing but yeah of course it was obvious and I don't you're "trying to be a wise guy."

It wasn't mentioned in the script --I don't think-- but maybe they didn't do things like that in those days? Not wanting to be labeled a "Jewish" film
A much better film Herman Wouk's Majorie Morningstar is also very Jewish and while not mentioning it specifically, there are many referrences that were probably a first in film.
