I guess they wanted you to think he walked out of the orphanage and into the newspaper office. I have some insight into this character. My first husband's grandfather killed his grandmother and his dad was also raised in an orphanage and joined the Navy when he was 15. When he reached the age his dad was when he killed his mother, he had a sort of breakdown thinking he would do the same thing. Was Alan the same age as his Dad? That would have been an interesting point to his character. I thought for all the great actors in this and with Maureen Stapleton's great film debut, I thought this was a huge misfire. The idea that Dolores Hart would have been Montgomery Clift's girlfriend was a terrible mismatch. The characters were raging and despairing, but they seem to dance around it and kept the real truth of it hidden from us. It was also sad to see Myrna Loy sink into these sad lush roles in her later years. From the Terrace also comes to mind.
