I liked it!

I'm glad I watched this the other night on TCM. I watched it without too much analyzing, just simply enjoyed it. It reminded me in some ways of SCAPEGOAT, the Du Maurier story, one of my favorites. I kind of wanted it to be a sad ending, that YES, he wasn't THE GUY, haha! but found it well worth watching. Loved to have seen the play!!

Well, the ending was just what I hoped for! :-) I loved it. Bogarde was amazing. And de Havilland was pretty impressive too, especially in the courtroom when the doubt started to creep into her face.

Interesting that you mentioned "The Scapegoat" -- I just got that one at a big sale at Warner Archive but haven't seen it yet. If it's anything like this one, I'm really going to enjoy it!

scapegoat is a really great book, too. after you watch it, come back and tell me what you thought! i agree, Bogarde was amazing in LIBEL - and he looked so handsome!! Olivia never fails us!!!

I admire both of these actors, but me (and the friend I just watched Libel with) found no "marital" chemistry between them. Bogarde looked younger than Olivia, even with the grey hair, and they just didn't gel as a couple at least to us.

I agree with you on that!!

I really liked it too! I was surprised. Once you get over a few implausible elements it is a good, suspenseful drama.

I am a big fan of both performers but I agree they seem like an odd couple. Olivia is so composed and nurturing while Dirk is so boyish and vulnerable.
