Anybody know why Jack Hawkins hides in a drain?

It has puzzled me since this is never explained.
In the opening sequences Colonel Hyde (Hawkins) is seen hiding under a manholw cover in what can only be a sewer ( complete with dinner jacket (Tux)and dicky bow) - He then emerges ( completely spotless) to then scurry over to his Rolls.

Not only odd but unexplained - any idea?

I always assumed he was checking out the bank as he mentions dropping explosives in the sewers in one of the briefings.

That's the conclusion I came to that he was doing a 'reccie'. My only question was 'why in a dinner-jacket?' I like to look on it though, as one of those 'quirky, unexplained little things' that makes this film so special. This is possibly my favourite British film of all time - even beating Kes ... and I loved Kes!

I believe he enjoyed the aroma.

Recon mission, for sure. A good soldier knows his objective inside and out.

Natural instinct - that`s what he always does when startled.
