I've just read the book, loved it and would like to know if anybody know if the Ichikawa film is available on dvd anywhere, or if anybody knows of plans (can one hope for a Criterion?) of this coming out...

It came out on 9/28/07 in Japan. You can get it from yesasia.com. However, I don't know if it has English subtitles or not.

You can get an English subbed version on DVD from japaneiga.com. It's good VHS quality. Janus films(linked to Criterion)own the rights in the US so it may come out on their Eclipse label.

A really weird and deliciously funny film. I hope that Criterion can release it someday.
