Inspiration for the Fantastic Four?
Lindenbrook = Reed Richards - leader and brains of the op
Carla = Sue Storm
Alec = Johnny Storm - Younger member of the group kind of fiery
Hans Belker = Thing - Big strong dude
Interesting - I just watched the movie again (haven't seen it since I was a kid) and the same thing occurred to me about a quarter way through.
Don't forget, Count Saknussem = Dr. Doom, the leader of the expedition's scientific rival!

Try Count Saknussem = The Moleman, the FF's very first villain! You know, the brutish guy who was searching for THE CENTER OF THE EARTH!

Thinking back, I wouldn't be surprised if Thayer David (as opposed to the character he played) was the inspiration for pre-cosmic ray bombardment Ben Grimm in the original comics. David was a large, imposing figure. Not overly tall, but imposing, and with a face that looked as if he'd just laugh and spit out a tooth if you slugged him. (Just before he broke you in half, that is.)
