Running time?

Both my R1 DVD and my Aussie blu-ray are 129 minutes. IMDb lists 132 minutes. Does anyone know anything about this? Is there actually a 132 minute version?

This is interesting. Leonard Maltin's guide also says 132 minutes, but the new Twilight Time Blu-ray says 129. (I've also seen 130, but I think that's really 129 plus some seconds.) Maltin usually notes any versions with different running times but says nothing in this case.

When I've seen it it definitely runs about 129 minutes, not 132. I've never seen or heard of any alternate version with more scenes in it. (There is a version where the song the students sing is looped over with Brahms's academic song in Latin, which I saw once many years ago and never again encountered, but otherwise the film was the same.) I've seen this film dozens of times over the past 50 years and it's always the same.

Unless there's an alternate version kicking around that no one here knows about (doubtful), my guess is that the 132 number is just an error that crept in somewhere along the line and has been repeated in certain references. IMDb might just be imitating Maltin, for example. When watching the movie it's definitely 129. (A Region 2 DVD would have a shorter running time due to the characteristics of the PAL system, but that's a different thing.)
