Saw it at last

I saw it today and got confused. First, I loved the novel, however the movie was more like sugar-coated even though it had the essence of the book which is racism.
what got me confused is the movie was shot in France in French with French cast even though the story was entirely set in redneck town, USA.

Hope someone remakes it someday....
