Filming Locations

Does anyone know where the railraod crossing near the end of the film is located? The one where the three trains are all backed up because Jane's train has run out of coal. Just curious.

One of the earliest messages says that the film was made in his/her home town - Chester, Connecticut. Maybe that's where the scene was done.

Years ago, someone told me about this movie. He was excited that it was filmed locally and said the location filming was done in Groton, Connecticut.

Guys: They used a number of locations on the NYNH&H RR in Connecticut. The station was in Chester, where she takes a tour of the Engine with the Engineer, The coal tower was at the Cedar Hill yard in New Haven. The "stopped train- helicopter" scene was Plainfield CT....There are more but all the scenes with trains were in CT on the NHRR...

I worked on the Penn Central, Conrail and Metro North RR for 20 years, and this flick was and is legendary among the employees..Most of us had a tape of it and watched it just to see what it was like in the 1950's as the Steam Engine was the last one to operate on the New Haven RR..

You can see the railroad lines cross at this Google link.

davidinhartford: I think it was in Haddam, but I cannot find the source...might have been on the old NYNH&H discussion site, which is now gone....

I know I have found that place at least once in the 70's or 80's, and it was near the Valley RR Museum, like maybe 10 miles or less...but do not rely on me on this, as they have changed some of that area recently...

David: that is the place! (on your google link), there was an interlocking tower on the NW corner for years...I visited it once, but did not ever work there, as I was on the NH main to NY as an operator....

Dale, I actually rode thru that junction on the Essex Valley steam train. They did a special run from Worchester Massachusetts down to Jewett City Connecicut and back. One of the crew pointed out that location as being in this movie. It is still very recognisable today.

David: Is the tower still there? I was a Milford resident, and did not get to the East end very often...I did work at Hartford a bit once or twice, when they could not cover the job on that roster before amtrak took over....Compared to the west end, these jobs were downright quiet!!

Hmm, I don't recall if the tower was still there. It is hard to see on the Google Earth website what remains. If I get a chance I'll drive over and snap some pics.
