A remake for the 2020s?

I remember seeing this film on television in the 1970s and being shocked by it. The scene with Annie going to Sarah Jane's school to give her the doll and Sarah Jane's emotional meltdown at the funeral still stick in my memory. Her rejection of her mother in her determination to pass for white is painful to watch even now.

If this film was remade now, would it still have the same emotional impact? The whole issue of race is still the burning obsession of America despite the incremental progress. How would Sarah Jane operate in a world of social media, smart phones, the alt right and political correctness?

There is newer movie with Anthony Hopkins that has a similar plot. It's called The Human Stain (2003).
