song from film

ln the horse soldiers there is a scene where the union army hide across a river from a passing confederate army who are singing about a single star does anyone know what that song is and what does the signifcance of the single star relate to????

reply

The song is Bonnie Blue Flag. The flag bearing the single star was originally The Republic of West Florida then in revolt against Spain, 1810. Later Texas and Mississippi adopted the single star in a blue field. By the time of the Civil War the flag and the new song of the same name were adapted by the CSA in general. The song was a popular marching tune and the flag represented states rights without the slavery baggage of the stars and bars.

I'm not saying we won't get our hair mussed!
