Remastered 16x9 VCI US dvd Oct 2010

Just about to be released as a double feature with The Headless Ghost. I'll be picking up this remastered edition, perfect Halloween viewing.

Anyone else going for this new edition?

Hi there Incantatore

Hmm. Been thinking about it but I'm very happy with the release I own.

That said this version (and all the others) is the UK cinema version with BBFC imposed cuts missing the following:

- the stabbing that utilises ice-tongs
- sounds of screaming during the binocular murder
- shots of a woman's decapitated head being placed into a bag

I appreciate this new version is remastered and restored (these are very vague terms nowadays) and the transfer of VCI's original release isn't too shabby by any degree, however, if this re-release restores the cut scenes, I wouldn't think twice. I'd be in there faster than a ferret up a drain pipe.

Perhaps you could do me a kindness and confirm if the cuts have been restored - better yet, if you could let me know the run time (from your DVD player) that'd be fab! The runtime of the original VCI version is 78m 7s.

Hi,

Thanks for the informative reply. Sadly this site http://www.dvddrive-in.com/reviews/e-h/hermancohenheadlessghost59.htm appears to confirm the new edition is the same as the previous VCI release.
I'll be picking up the older version. I assume the BBFC cut footage is lost...

reply

Hi Incantatore

I don’t know if it’s lost but I do know it was cut when it was originally submitted to the BBFC and to the best of my knowledge all DVDs contain the same cut of the film.

Can't help think if the likes of Synapse had got a hold of it, Don would at least make some effort to put together a worthy special edition.

Doubtful Studio Canal would bother restoring such an old title for Europe. We're lucky the UK dvd has a trailer and anamorphic enhancement.

To be honest, it doesn't need it, really. I put it on again after noticing this thread and have to say, it's a very good transfer. Very sharp, progressively flagged and the original disc is loaded with good extras. Its OOP now but easy enough to pick up from Marketplace traders. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

What I meant was Don having a darn good search for the cut footage. Still the original VCI disc will suffice.

reply

Yeah, sorry mate. Don would be the ideal man for the job. No question about that. If someone was going to do it, I'd rather see Synapse go the whole hog with it rather than Blue Underground or Anchor Bay. Severin Films also take a great deal of care over their releases, too but it doesn't fit their roster really.
