A more beautiful movie?

Does anyone know of a more beautiful movie? I have seen thousands of movies, and yet whenever I try to picture visual poetry, "Hiroshima Mon Amour" always comes to mind first. I just can't picture anything else taking it place as a mental prototype.

I find 5th generation directors' chinese movies incredibly beautiful, those would include movies by Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou. I also always fall for Wang Kar Wai's compositions in movies such as In the Mood for Love or 2046. But I don't know if we are talking about the same kind of beauty.

reply

Those ARE the types of beauty I am refering to. Cinematography, setting, dialogue, characters... I believe there to be some many dimensions of beauty! Zhang Yimou and Wang Kar Wai films are spectacular. Sam Mendes, Francis Ford and Sophia Coppola, Truffaut, Godard, Spielberg, Renoir, Kurosawa, and Antonioni all pop out of my head been discussing aesthetic qualities of film. But yet as I said, "Hiroshima Mon Amour" is the one film where every shot IS beautiful, where every line of dialogue IS spellbinding. If one were to take freeze-frames of this movie and hang them one their walls, they could absolutely pass as high photographic art.

Yeah,Hiroshima Mon Amour is really what may be called visual poetry.I can only think of Tarkovsky. Ivan's Childhood or Andrei Rublev or Nostalgia may come into comparison with this unforgettable visual fugue!

reply

Yes, this an incredibly beautiful film! I reccomend The Pillow Book. It's an extraordinary arthouse film just like this one, and is filmed in multiple languages including French, Japanese, English, Cantonese, and more. It's also a chronicle like this one, but even goes through longer periods of time, and it is not only a visual treat, but a spiritual and poetic treat as well! Another reccomended film is The Lover aka L'amant which is based on the autobiographical novel by Maurguerite Duras( the writer of Hiroshima)about when she was a French girl living in Vietnam, and how she had a passionate love affair with a rich Chinese man. Also, you should read the book, which has the same style of writing.

reply

I agree that Duras's book "L'Amant" is worth reading, but the film? I thought Annaud misinterpreted the novel, and Duras herself renounced any involvement with it and re-published the book exactly how she would like to see it on screen in case anyone else had a go at filming it. His is a masculine portrayal, I think, whereas Resnais, who worked closely with Duras, seemed to understand her unique female angle and Hiroshima Mon Amour owes its success to that.

You do know that there's such a thing as a cinematographer, don't you? (maybe you don't..)

I've never seen it yet, but it's on TV tonight and I intend to record it. Personally I think the most "beautiful" film to look at that I've ever seen is Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, where every shot in the film is like a painting.

"Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, where every shot in the film is like a painting."

My first thought was also of "Barry Lyndon" when trying to think of something even lovelier than "Hiroshima." But then it is my all time favorite film. Also Malick's "Days of Heaven" is amazing.

reply

4 years later... Nice mention of Barry Lyndon. My favorite movie. Also underrated as a comedy classic, but yes, true beauty.

reply

Agreed. I always thought HMA (I have just watched it again) is an example of when rarely cinema represents a form of art in its own
I cannot say there are many of these examples, after watching thousands of films, maybe Mirror or Fanny And Alexander .....

Quickly off the top of my head:
Institute Benjamenta
Vertical Rays of the Sun
The Cook, The Thief...
Raise the Red Lantern
Girl With A Pearl Earring
Akira Kurosawa's Dreams
Wings of Desire
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Hero
House of Flying Daggers
Schindler's List

There are many more if I spent some time really remembering. I think any of thses movies are at least as beautiful as Hiroshima...my $.02

As with spectacular images: Ang Lee (not with The Hulk though), Zhang Yimou and Wang Kar Wai's films clearly represent the colorful and exuberant side of the cinema.

As with exemplary camera-work: Kurosawa films, Schindler's List, American History X, Citizen Kane, Sword of Doom, Sam Mendes films, and both of the Coppolas can use a camera to a stunning degree and accomplish almost anything.

As with visual poetry: Hiroshima Mon Amour, Tokyo Story, and Antonioni films can use every image to its full potential of meaning and beauty.

Where does Hitchcock fit in? His camera-work is most of the time nothing short of amazing.

What about Visconti?

i think the Conformist by Bertolucci rivals Hiroshima in visual beauty or any other film for that matter. But i prefer marienbad over mon amour. Just got Muriel and have never seen that one.

Renais has a very intriguing visual style compared to most of the french new wave filmmakers but i also love Truffaut.

an yea what about visconti? the damned, the leopard, senso, all beautiful films!

And like almost everyone stated, pretty much everything by Malick.

reply

Yes it is beautiful, and CRITERION does it justice
