Is this the movie...?

Many years ago, I'd say in the late 70s or early 80s, I saw a movie on late night television that had an oddball family (or other small group of people) living in a house in some woods or a forest, possibly on the outskirts of a town or community, who were thought to be weird by the other inhabitants of the community. I can't remember any details or any of the actors who were in it, except that I remember the ending pretty vividly. Someone went to check on the strange people and found that their house was no longer there, and had been replaced by a bird nest, with a family of birds in it. I assumed that the viewer was to believe that the people had changed into birds, or were birds in the first place but had for some reason taken human form, but changed back when they found it difficult to live as humans.

My mother is positive this movie was Green Mansions, but I strongly doubt it. She saw Green Mansions many years ago and remembers that Audrey Hepburn played some kind of Bird Lady in it. I think I would've remembered Lee J. Cobb, Audrey Hepburn, and Tony Perkins if they had been in the movie I saw. I also don't think the movie I saw took plac ein a rain forest, but rather a regular temperate forest. I think it could've been a British movie, or maybe some made-for-TV movie. I looked into The People (with William Shatner and Kim Darby) as a possibility, but found no mention of birds.

I would love to know what this movie was, who was in it and where I can find it so I can see it again. It has haunted me for decades.

I just watched Green Mansions and there's definitely no bird nest or people changing into birds (or believed to be doing so) at all.

Hepburn is quite human, speaks English, and isn't mystical in any way.

Or is she?

The movie does have its "magic" or fantastical elements (and awesome set pieces), but your mother may be confusing two movies. You should try the I Need to Know board.

You posted in 2009, but you also posted a few minutes ago, so I'm replying knowing you're alive and well lol

Yes I'm very much alive, and still don't know what movie this was. I was pretty sure it was not Green Mansions.

Someone once said maybe it was the original Tuck Everlasting. I've since seen the remake and that one didn't seem anything like what I'm remembering either.
