Sandra Dee not in sequels? Why not?

Anybody out there know why Sandra Dee was not in the gidget sequels?

Personally, they were all good in their own way but no one compares to Sandra.

She was under contract with another studio. They allowed her to go make Gidget for another studio and then she had to fulfill her contract obligations, therefore, not allowing her to continue being Gidget for the sequels! Hope this helps!

Sandra was loaned out to Columbia for the film. She was under contract to Universal Studios, which, as the previous poster stated, insisted that she fufill her contract, which expired in the late 60s, and she refused to renew.

I watched "Gidget" once on TCM and Robert Orborne said that one of the reasons she didn't appear in the sequels was that when she made Gidget she was an up-and-comer, but 1959 was a huge year for her (she was also in "A summer Place", "Imitation of Life", etc.) and by the time the sequels rolled around she was just too big a star to appear in such alleged minor trifles as the Gidget sequels and was performing more adult roles.

That would also make sense.

She also married Bobby Darin around that time, who had a lot of control and power over her -- he might not have wanted her to do them for fear of typecasting, or not have wanted her in show business at all, because he was such a big deal at the time.

She was loaned to Columbia to be "Gidget" (only once).
Sandra Dee went on to play "Tammy" (another iconic 1960s lass) which was a Universal Studios-owned character created by Debbie Reynolds.

That doesn't make sense. For one thing Sandra Dee appeared in films with Bobby Darrin and made many films after they married.

She was under contract but she still could have done the sequels because the film was a hit. I was watching TCM tonight and a guy that's an authority on 60's films said her studio now wanted her to take over the 'Tammy' sequels from Debbie Reynolds and did not want competition from their own star also doing the 'Gidget' sequels. So Deborah Walley (an unknown) was hired to be the new 'Gidget'. Ironically Walley didn't want to be typecast so she only did the 2nd film in the series, but she was typecast in beach films anyway. So in the Sandra Dee situation it was a matter of making 'Tammy' more successful than 'Gidget'. So the studio pulled her from the franchise.
