The Girl with Polio was Mistreated

at the end of the movie when the gila in on the loose, his sister and her maid (i donno) were running from it. but my questions:

why did the maid make the girl carry that huge bag?
why did she make the girl run? More of, HOW could the girl run?
and why the frick did that maid leave the girl there when she fell? she just left her to die!

i know its a B movie, but common, the kid had polio

Don't ya cats know anything about storytelling?
They abandoned her, to throw an opportunity to
Chase Winstead and his girlfriend a chance to
save the disabled girl's life whilst destroying
the monster.

reply

That's nothing compared to Chase's mistreatment of her by making her listen to him sing "Laugh, Children, Laugh."

Forget vaccines - that song is all you need to cure Polio. Or any other disease.

All I can say is that not everybody comes across like a hero in frightening situations. Most people, when confronted with death, would haul a*s and let the other guy fend for himself.

reply

It's not a maid. Missy, the sister, was spending the night with another family whose house the gila monster attacked. I believe that is the mother and her son whom she was visiting.

And, yeah, it's wrong of them to leave the crippled kid to fend for herself. It reminds me of that old joke about surviving a bear attack. "We can't run faster than the monster, Mommy!" "Don't worry, Timmy, we don't have to outrun the gila monster, we just have to outrun the hors d'Ĺ“uvre... er... Missy."

Apparently saving herself and her own child were the only priorities she had. Note to Chase and Mom Winstead: No more overnights for Missy.

Update:

why did the maid make the girl carry that huge bag?

I just looked at a DVD of Legend Films' restored print and zoomed in on Missy during the shot in question. She isn't carrying anything.

Starting to watch all my Halloween movies and I'm watching this one now, haha.

Come on, Franklin! It'll be a fun trip!

If you turn up the volume really loud, you can hear the lady say to Missy: "I don't have to outrun the giant gila monster, I just have to outrun you!" (I'm pretty sure her name was Mrs. Darwin.)

I just watched the movie and the mother did not say any such thing. And her name was Mrs. Blackwell. You might be thinking about the remade movie, "Gila". I have not watched it so I can not say whether what you heard is in that movie or not, but it was not in this one.

It was not her maid, it was the mother of the friend she was staying the night with.
The girl was not carrying any huge bag.
The woman was running with another child that i'm assuming was hers. As the child's mother, her thoughts would have been to take care of her child. My guess is that in her panic, she sought to save her child's life. Yes, that was wrong because she really should have thought of how to save Missy and her own child. But under panic, people sometimes act selfishly. But the woman might have sought to get her own child to safety and then tried to come back for Missy. We have no definite proof she left Missy there to die.
