I don't get it - SPOILER ALERT

Why would having the bullet or hiding it from the police be in Elliot's advantage? Clearly the shot hit the books not the dead guy. We know that's not what killed him.

In the movie they seem to suggest the shot triggered his heart attack or whatever actually killed him but he had an existing heart condition. Anything could have triggered it like a car backfiring, the strain of the trip, or just the pressure from living a life of crime.

Elliot could claim the gun misfired when he was cleaning at some other time prior to or since that night. There's no test to prove when it was fired or who fired it. Besides, he was there the guy was there to commit and died in the commission of a crime. Of course Elliot might want to threaten or scare him in some way. A heated argument between the two could also have been a factor.

I enjoyed the movie but I just didn't get any of the bullet part of it.

I don't get the fireplace. The hole was filled in. Hitch tells him to use the fireplace to dispose of the body. But the body is never burned (since the other thugs recognized him, his full-sized body is shown wrapped up in shower curtain at the end, and the briefcase full of money is unharmed) and he somehow ends up under the gazebo anyway (the 6ft hole is filled in, but apparently there is enough room to insert charred remains, that apparently weren't even remains at all but a full-size body). Did I miss something?

I believe Elliott used the fireplace shovel to dig the hole. He did not burn the body.

Exactly, Hitchcock apparently asked Elliott if he had a fireplace in order to suggest using the fireplace shovel, to which Elliott said, "Fireplace?" Even though I was looking at the fireplace shovel during their conversation, hearing him say "Fireplace?" threw me off, too, momentarily :)

Mag, Darling, you're being a bore.

That's true. Even if certain people were convinced that the shot triggered the heart attack, a good attorney would've pointed out what you did during Elliott's hearing or trial. Maybe it was just a way to throw in some last minute drama/comedy.
